Thematic Group Biomaterials & Materials

Biomaterialien & WerkstoffeLocated at the interface between materials science and medicine, among biomaterials are summarized various groups of materials – e. g. metals, ceramics or polymers. They function alone or in combination with cellular components as a temporary or permanent replacement of organs, parts of organs or body structures. The direct contact with living cells and tissues defines the properties of materials and especially their surface concerning biocompatibility and infection prevention.

In addition to use in the field of joint replacement biomaterials gain increasingly in importance e. g. as scaffolds in regenerative medicine (tissue engineering) or as drug delivery systems. In addition to the named properties, the extended range of requirements in these applications is amplified by dfined bioresorbability or nanostructuring.
